The one who had extra children just for the food stamps
The one with a gun who stops a burglar
The one who stole the job just because he was Mexican
The one who got the promotion only because she was black
The one whose eye was blacked because her boyfriend was acting in self-defense
Sure.
It happens.
But when did the exception become the rules by which we live?

Doubtful. Even more doubtful is that anyone who believes the exception IS the rule will change their way of thinking, which is even sadder.

And they’re very rare exceptions. Yet you’re right, it’s those exceptions people so often want to focus on. I was just planning a post on kind of a similar subject…
Your thoughts above remind me of a statistic I found when I was creating our church’s Congregation Protection Policy eleven years ago: Fewer than 10% of sexual abuse allegations made by children are false. Therefore we must take every single allegation seriously – it’s very unlikely to be proven false. Not that I would personally ignore an allegation, but I think the tendency to think kids make this stuff up is at least a small part of what made some organizations allow abuse to continue for so long.

I was reading abortion statistics because of the never-ending female body battlefield. And the same sort of thing applies. Only about 1% of all abortions are ‘late-term’ abortions, and many of those are done for medical reasons (not all, but many). Yet people focus on that small number. Or the statistics of false rape allegations, or the tendency to believe that any woman coming forward to accuse a celebrity of abuse must be only after the publicity. You’ll notice that most of these people we don’t believe are women. No coincidence there.

You’re absolutely right, and it’s sickening. Here’s what I wish this particular debate would focus on: Even if abortion was criminalized, women would still get abortions. Privileged women would do it in a safe environment, and poor women will go back to barbaric conditions. Of course, I have a feeling that the same people who are anti-abortion would also not mind a little eugenics experiment – Yay, let’s kill off those poor, lazy, “taker” women by forcing them to have dangerous abortions! Wow, is that too cynical?

Nope. That’s what I always wonder when people are anti-choice, anti-birth control and anti-welfare. Do they think people are going to stop having kids? What is going to happen to those children? I think a lot of what you described above is already happening in places like Texas. Not cynical. Sadly realistic. I’m starting to think that The Handmaid’s Tale should be required reading.

I know. I’m like a train wreck at the moment. I keep telling myself I’m going to write a nice sweet nostalgic piece or a fluffy parenting thing. But nope. I’m like that guy from The Godfather. Just when I thought I was out, they drag me back in…something about this election has awakened the placard carrying/shouting/feminist protestor in me. I’m not sure if it’s the election or my age or what. But she’s there scratching to get out.

The exception to the rule has become the urban legend “biscuits in the can exploding in the carseat like a gunshot” or “twins named Lemonjello and Orangejello”. Sadly, too many people can’t see the ridiculousness of all of these and the impact in the ones you mentioned.
